yesterday i received a call from a friend reminding me of the brief time here on this big earth until we are united with our heavenly father. sure there’s all those clichés, but why is it an idea that we so quickly forget… that is until we are reminded again?
i have to smile through the tears as i post these next few pics. they were taken about a year ago celebrating marriage and family. though i typically decline extended families, the lord knew what he was doing all along. what makes me laugh is the fact that usually i have to get the kids to stop goofing off… not necessarily the dads.

so i’m on this new kick. i’ve fallen hard. there’s just something i love about… video. i think that if i were to do it all over yet again – a video person (what are they called – a videographer?) would make it to the top of the list. moving images put to music does me in every time! some of my favorite family memories are when my dad broke out the classic 8mm films – you know, the ones with just the picture… sound hadn’t quite made it on the scene yet? for a brief moment, time was erased. the past suddenly became the present.
so on to my next kick – documenting the people that mean the most to me. for some reason they always get pushed to the back burner. well, not any more! or maybe i should say, not this past weekend!
it was the classic fall day. immensely overcast – random sprinkles – a gusty wind… can you say perfect beach day?! i packed up my precious little nieces and drove to the quaint little town of empire, michigan to ‘go play on the toys’ which for those of you who can put two and two together was code for ‘taking pictures’.
i knew the love was mutual when i heard a winey voice say, “aunt kris. why do we always have to take picture first before we can do anything fun.” oh the love – followed up by, “no i don’t want to do that. i want to play. are we done yet?”
so here’s to all of you who think your kids are the only ones who don’t love having their pictures taken – or my all time favorite, “are other peoples kids ever THIS bad?”

on that note, i’ll let you decide for yourself

and finally…. drum roll please……
i broke out my point and shoot and started to play around with the video function.
sit back and enjoy my very first video production creatively titled: sisters at the beach
sisters at the beach from kristin root on Vimeo.
now go off and document the ones you love!

i still remember vividly going over to her house in kindergarten. she had the complete set of my little ponies – stable included which equated to an instant friend. to my luck she moved down the street, and without her my childhood would have been non-existent. i grew up at carries… literally… with my own chair at her dinner table included. she had the sisters i never had – both older and younger – and even a baby brother which we often enjoyed dressing up like a girl (much to the dismay of her dad!). we spent hours roller skating around her basement to ricky nelson, playing barbies, trading stickers, creating fort after fort, and let’s not forget the evening games of kick-the-can which turned into bloody murder when it got dark. she was the ‘bestest’ friend any girl could have.
fast forward a few years - measles outbreak. everyone needs to get an updated vaccine. so my mom being a nurse decided to bring the vaccine home and give it to us herself. long story short – i freaked out and decided to “run away”… all the way to our front porch that is. i lasted out there a few hours… right until the lights started going out. when i returned inside my dad and i had a little talk. there’s really only one sentence that i remember about what he said to me that night. he dropped the bomb and it went something along the line of… “if you don’t get this shot, you won’t be able to go to carrie’s house for a week.”
that was all he needed to say.
so without further ah-du, i introduce to you my always smiling, wonderful friend carrie and her beautiful family…

it’s not everyday i get to write that “i’m a winner” so i’m taking advantage of it.
i can’t tell you how may times i’ve filled out little papers with my name & information (ok – often more than what’s allowed), crinkled them up just right (hoping it will increase my chances), and stuffed them down the narrow opening – - only to always come up empty handed.
so when i heard shootsac [a fabulous camera bag] was having a contest i jumped on in… to try my luck yet again. the challenge was to use the bag’s cover in a creative way. so here’s the entry:

the only difference this time around???
i won! check it out for yourself at the shootsac blog
now that’s a freaky friday!

(here’s a hand delivered note from my niece [chloe] when she found out her little bro helped her aunt take the cake — i’m thinkin i may tape it to my computer as a daily reminder – you know, for one of those downer days

i knew that some of my blog readers would get a kick out of this…

yes my friends, i’m in the process of taking down my christmas tree.
usually by this stage in the game my husband has helped me “put things away” by chucking everything into one big box. emphasis on chucking. a big no-no!! it brings back bad memories from my teen years. guess he’s learned his own coping mechanisms now.
you may think that i’m one of those christmas fanatics, but actually it depends on the year. some years i have nothing up… and then there’s the others where, well you get the point.
this was one of those years.

that’s what my 2nd graders call out whenever we talk about the election. our class vote was 21 for mr. baraco to 2 for mc cain. to say the least, he’s their hero. seeing i was a social studies major ( i know – a far stretch ) and a sucker for great shots i think you’ll like this too.
a little different perspective…click HERE

so for my faithful blog followers, i need to apologize for the lack of action on my end. i have greatly enjoyed a fun and busy december celebrating the birth of CHRIST as well as a rejuvenating january getting back into the swing of life again. it’s funny how i nearly forgot how to teach upon having to return to my second grade friends following a wonderful christmas vacation.
anyways, lots of NEW and EXCITING things are in the works! ! february (the season of love) will bring to the forefront my labor of love during my hiatus over the last few months. stay tuned…. and check back!

this movie has been going around – i’ve seen it many places, but just took the time to watch it. basically, it sums up everything (and more) about how i feel about the christmas season. where have we gone so astray?? maybe you feel the same way .
for those of you who are looking for a deeper way to experience christmas this year, do something about it! one of my favorite organizations is united in christ ministries. every christmas season they distribute needs sheets to people of the inner-city black hills community that they serve. this year the reply and request for needs was overwhelming. want to make a difference? want to help show someone the true meaning of why we celebrate? call tami @ 669-3881 she’ll be happy to match you up with a family to whom you can share the real reason for the season.
